Do you know which is your dominant eye?

When you start archery, the first thing you need to determine is whether you are right- or left-handed. This question may seem trivial, but it is not. Whether you are left- or right-handed in archery does not depend on which hand you prefer to use, e.g. for writing, but which of your eyes is the dominant one. What does this mean? It means that you have one eye with a slightly larger field of vision than the other and that this eye is able to provide more detailed information about your surroundings; for this reason this eye is called "dominant". If you have a dominant left eye, you are a left-handed archer; if you have a dominant right eye, you are a right-handed archer.

If not, you can determine which of your eyes is the dominant one with a simple test.

Extend one arm, keep both eyes open and point one finger at an object in the distance as if your finger were the sight of your bow; now alternately close one eye at a time: the eye with which your finger remains pointed at the chosen object while the other eye is closed is your dominant eye. The eye with which you see your finger moving away from the targeted object, on the other hand, is the so-called supporting eye and not the dominant eye.

Simple, isn't it? But not entirely unimportant.

Now that you have worked out that you are a right archer or perhaps a left archer, make sure you don't get confused: The right-hand archer holds the bow with the left hand and draws it with the right, while the left-hand archer holds the bow with the right hand and draws it with the left. Usually bows for right-handers (i.e. held with the left hand) are called "right-handers" and marked RH (Right Hand), while bows for left-handers (held with the right hand) are called "left-handers" and marked LH (Left Hand).
